The fighting over Jerusalem and Israel will never end without divine intervention. Israelis feel surrounded by enemies and remember the Holocaust and sometimes lose the moral high ground fighting without the ethics we wish would always be used – because if they tie one hand behind their back they will be annihilated. But then the Arabs in Israel see they are second class citizens in a war zone where thousands of “their” people are killed and retaliate in “defense” of what they also perceive as their homeland. Everybody has ancient claims. Everybody feels they have the right to defend themselves. Everybody sees an enemy. I suspect that the seemingly inevitable two-state solution could be a blessing, so long as people truly accept a border as permanent.
