Dean Smith at the opentheword blog writes:

“There have been some Christians and others predicting the end of the world through a collision between Earth and a mystery planet lurking in our solar system called Nibiru.

In mid-September, Jason Meade who claims to be a Christian numerologist stated the countdown for this collision started on September 23, 2017. He certainly received his 15-minutes of fame with media around the world picking up his story.

People have been talking about Nibiru since the 1990s and similarly predicting the world’s catastrophic end.

I even stated in my post on Meade’s prediction that if this planet existed astronomers would have noticed it through its effects on the trajectory of other planets and celestial objects.

I was a bit rash in my judgement because a couple of weeks later, October 4, 2017, NASA released a statement that it had found irrefutable evidence a ninth planet exits in our solar system.

It even suggested that this mystery planet was ten times larger than earth. Coincidentally, those promoting Nibiru also state its massive.

NASA claims that it has not been able to see this planet because of its unusual elliptical orbit. It is so far out that they suspect it takes thousands of years for it to orbit the sun…

NASA concluded:

“If you were to remove this explanation and imagine Planet Nine does not exist, then you generate more problems than you solve. All of a sudden you have five different puzzles and you must come up with five different theories to explain them.”

So where does this leave the Nibiru prediction? Well NASA even acknowledged the controversy stating:

“If a planet is there, it’s extremely distant and will stay that way (with no chance – in case you’re wondering – of every colliding with Earth, or bringing a day of darkness).”

So does the Bible speak of a massive planet hitting earth?

No.

However, in the Book of Revelation (the Apostle John’s vision of the end times) he refers to stars hitting the earth. Some believe these are references to asteroid hits.

In the first mention, the Apostle John speaks of multiple asteroids hitting land:

13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. (Revelation 6:13 NASV)

…And in his second reference, the Apostle John sees a mountain-sized asteroid burning through the Earth’s atmosphere and hitting one of our oceans resulting in a massive die off of sea life:

The second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood, and a third of the creatures which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed.(Revelation 8:8-9 NASV)

An asteroid that size would cause catastrophic damage. The Apostle added that a third of the ships in the sea would be destroyed as well, I suspect due to the resulting tsunamis such a hit would cause.

And even Jesus referred to “terrors in the skies” leading up to His second coming (Luke 21:11).

Though catastrophic, these are clearly not references to a planet, ten-times larger, smashing into Earth.”

The meaning of the ancient word “Nibiru” has been mangled and transformed and sensationalized in my lifetime.  Zecharia Sitchin made absurd claims in books like The 12th Planet that only he could accurately decipher ancient texts on the subject.  In ancient Sumerian texts, “Nibiru” originally meant a “crossing point” like an intersection or a doorway or gateway.  It was associated with the galactic center at the intersection of two great lines in the sky – the spine of the Milky Way, and the plane of the ecliptic.  Research from astrophysicists, from Carl Seyfert to Paul LaViolette, suggests the galactic center periodically spews out matter and energy, becoming visible as a bright blue light.  Our ancient ancestors saw this; it is the Hopi’s Blue Star Kachina, The Egyptian Eye of Horus, India’s Navel of Vishnu, the Arab’s Tariq Star… and the Sumerian’s NIBIRU.

Imagine if you will that quadrillions of tons of ice accumulate near the North and South Poles, but not precisely centered at the poles.  The Antarctic ice sheet is 300 miles off center today.  This puts significant and ever increasing torque on the crust of the earth, pushing the ice mass towards the equator.  But the friction between the layers of the earth keeps everything in place and prevents the crust from floating and rotating away to correct the imbalance.  The magnetic field of the earth generates high viscosity (resistance to flow) in otherwise liquid molten iron.  But if the earth’s magnetic field weakens enough, it would be like turning an electromagnetic lock off – we would suddenly experience a pole shift and the surface of the planet would quickly and catastrophically change.

The last time this happened was at least 6,500-7,000 years ago, and was probably the explanation for Noah’s Flood… At that time Nibiru – the crossing point of the ecliptic and the Milky Way – was clearly illuminated by a bright new blue star – the suddenly visible, periodically active galactic center spewing out all sorts of dust and light and radiation including high gamma radiation and more importantly – a gravity wave.  Perhaps an alignment at this point in the sky existed when the sun and Jupiter and the active galactic center came together appeared to cause a pole shift.

Over time, the blue “star” of Nibiru fades away… and the memory of what happened, and the astronomical bodies that aligned thousands of years ago are no longer understood.  By Babylonian times, they still thought of Nibiru as the highest god’s star, at a crossing point, splitting the sky in half and rules over the rotation of the heavens, setting the proper motion of the stars… They also associated it with Jupiter, but only sometimes…

Nibiru – the appearance of the suddenly active galactic center as a new blue star at the crossing point of the ecliptic and the Milky Way – may very well appear at the avatar of the Wrath of God at the time of a cataclysmic pole shift that devastates the surface of the planet.  If you want to understand what Nibiru originally meant, read about pole shifts, the galactic center, Carl Seyfert, Paul LaViolette, the Book of Revelation, and ancient mythology… but not Zecharia Sitchin’s The 12th Planet.  There is no rogue planet that almost crashes into Earth every 3,600 years.
